This lecture is presented in conjunction with the How We See: Photobooks by Women Reading Room, which is on view in the Design and Media Center Lower Atrium from 19-21 March (11am to 6pm daily).
Oluremi C. Onabanjo is a curator and scholar of photography and the arts of Africa and the African Diaspora. The former Director of Exhibitions and Collections at The Walther Collection Project Space, she has organized exhibitions in Africa, Europe, and North America. Onabanjo was a co-curator of Recent Histories: Contemporary African Photography (2017), and editor of its accompanying publication (Steidl), which was shortlisted for an ICP Infinity Award in Critical Writing and Research (2018) and named “One of the Best Photo Books of 2017” by The New York Times.
Onabanjo lectures internationally on photography and curatorial practice, and during Spring 2019 is a Visiting Critic at the University of Pennsylvania’s MFA program. She has contributed to catalogues and monographs published by 10x10 Photobooks, the American Federation of Arts, Aperture Foundation, Autograph ABP, The Museum of Modern Art, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and The Walther Collection amongst others. Onabanjo has served on the jury for the New Talent Photography Award in Beijing, China, as a nominator for the Prix Pictet and Vontobel Contemporary Photography Prize. Currently a Ph.D. candidate in Art History at Columbia University, she holds an M.Sc. in Visual, Material, and Museum Anthropology from Oxford University and a B.A. in African Studies from Columbia University.
